A control surface for steering through fluid media.
A rudder is a primary control surface that steers vehicles moving through a fluid, like water or air—including ships, boats, submarines, hovercraft, and airships. It works by redirecting the fluid flowing past the hull or fuselage, which creates a turning or yawing motion. In its simplest form, a rudder is a hinged flat sheet attached to the craft's stern, tail, or after end, often shaped to reduce drag. On small boats, a tiller—a stick or lever—connects to the rudder's top for manual steering. Larger vessels use cables, pushrods, or hydraulics to link rudders to steering wheels. In aircraft, the rudder is operated by foot pedals through mechanical linkages or hydraulics, and its main job is to counteract adverse yaw and p-factor, not to turn the plane directly.
The term "rudder" broadly covers all steering gear fastened outside a hull, including oars, paddles, and rudders. Ancient steering gear falls into two types: side-rudders and stern-mounted rudders, with "steering oar" sometimes used for both. In the Mediterranean, side-rudders are specifically called quarter-rudders. Stern-mounted rudders hang centrally at the back of the ship. Some scholars argue that steering oars used in ancient Egypt and Rome were not true rudders, reserving that term for the stern-mounted rudder first seen in Han dynasty China during the 1st century AD. A steering oar could interfere with sail handling, making it better suited for small vessels on narrow, fast waters; the rudder, by contrast, did not disturb sails, required less effort to operate, and was ideal for larger ocean-going ships. Before the rudder's invention, oversized steering oars or steering boards were used, typically attached to the starboard side of larger vessels.
In ancient Egypt, steering oars appeared on large vessels before 3100 BC. By the Old Kingdom (2686–2134 BC), passenger boats had up to five steering oars per side. A tiller, first a small pin through the oar stock, dates to the fifth dynasty (2504–2347 BC). The tiller and an upright steering post reduced the number of steering oars to one per side.
