Drip irrigation, also known as trickle irrigation, is a micro-irrigation system that delivers water slowly to plant roots, either above or below the soil surface, to minimize evaporation and improve efficiency. Its modern form was developed in Israel in the 1960s, building on earlier experiments in Germany and Australia, and has become a globally significant agricultural innovation.

Primitive drip irrigation using buried, unglazed clay pots was described in China during the first century BCE. Modern development began in Germany in 1860 with subsurface clay pipe experiments, expanded in the 1920s to perforated pipe systems, and later saw plastic water distribution developed in Australia by Hannis Thill. The plastic emitter was developed in Israel by Simcha Blass and his son Yeshayahu, who used friction to slow water through larger passageways, preventing clogging. The first experimental system was established in 1959, and Blass partnered with Kibbutz Hatzerim in 1964 to create Netafim, which patented the first practical surface drip irrigation emitter.
