The dioptra (also known as dioptre or diopter) is a classical astronomical and surveying instrument dating from the 3rd century BC. It consists of a sighting tube or a rod with sights at both ends, attached to a stand, and could be fitted with protractors to measure angles. Greek astronomers used the dioptra to measure the positions of stars, and it is referenced in the astronomical works of Euclid and Geminus.
