A lever is a simple machine made from a rigid beam or rod that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum. It is one of the six simple machines identified by Renaissance scientists. By amplifying an input force to produce a larger output force, it creates leverage—a mechanical advantage equal to the ratio of the output force to the input force. This means the lever trades off force for movement. Levers are classified into three types based on where the fulcrum, load, and effort are located.

In ancient Egypt, workmen used the lever to move and uplift obelisks weighing more than 100 tons.
The earliest remaining writings regarding levers date from the third century BC and were provided, by common belief, by the Greek mathematician Archimedes, who famously stated 'Give me a lever (long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it), and I shall move the world.' The Greek usually attributed to Archimedes does not include details about length of lever or fulcrum. That statement has given rise to the phrase 'an Archimedean lever' being adopted for use in many instances, including abstract concepts.
