Hypocaust

Ancient Roman underfloor heating system that circulated hot air.

A hypocaust is an ancient central heating system that generates and moves hot air beneath a room's floor. It can also heat walls through a network of pipes carrying that hot air, and even warm upper stories. The name comes from the Greek words *hupó* ("under") and *kaustós* ("burnt"). The earliest known mention of such a system describes the Temple of Ephesus being heated this way in 350 BC, though the Roman architect Vitruvius credits its invention to Sergius Orata around 80 BC. This innovation improved hygiene and daily life for citizens and paved the way for modern central heating.

In ancient Rome, hypocausts heated hot baths and other public buildings, as well as private homes. Wealthy merchants considered them essential for their villas across the Roman Empire. Ruins have been found throughout Europe—including Italy, England, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany—and in Africa. The floor was raised on small pillars called *pilae* stacks, which supported a layer of tiles, then concrete, then the room's floor tiles. Hot air and smoke from a furnace circulated through this space and rose through clay or tile flues (called *caliducts*) in the walls to roof outlets, warming floors and walls. The warmest rooms were placed closest to the furnace, and heat was controlled by adjusting the wood supply. Running a hypocaust was expensive and labor-intensive, requiring constant fire tending and much fuel, so it was mainly found in large villas and public baths. Vitruvius, writing around 15 BC in *De architectura*, described how to conserve fuel by placing men's and women's hot rooms (*caldaria*) next to each other and adjacent to a warm room (*tepidarium*) for efficient public baths. He also noted a bronze ventilator in the domed ceiling to adjust heat. Many Roman hypocaust remains survive across Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa.

Outside Rome, excavations in 1984–1985 at Dzalisi in the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic uncovered a large castle complex with a well-preserved hypocaust built between 200 and 400 AD. Korean homes have traditionally used *ondol* floor heating, which works on similar principles by drawing smoke from a wood fire, often used for cooking. *Ondol* was common in South Korean homes until the 1960s, when dedicated installations typically heated the main room using coal or biomass. It was a forerunner of modern central heating. However, it was expensive and labour-intensive to run, requiring constant attention to the fire and a lot of fuel, so it was a feature usually encountered only in large villas and public baths. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the hypocaust fell into disuse in the western provinces, but not in the Eastern Roman empire. In Britain, from c. 400 until c. 1900, central heating did not exist, and hot baths were rare. An evolution of the hypocaust was used in some monasteries in calefactories, which were heated via underground fires but retained heat via granite stones. In the Iberian Peninsula, the Roman system was adopted for the heating of Hispano-Islamic baths (hammams) of Al Andalus. A derivation, the gloria, was in use in Castile until the arrival of modern heating. In colonial British North America, the house of Maryland governor Charles Calvert was constructed in the 1720s with a hypocaust to heat a greenhouse for growing tropical plants.
