Hydraulis of Dion

Earliest archaeological pipe organ, discovered at Dion in 1992.

The Archaeological Museum of Dion holds a one-of-a-kind artifact: the Hydraulis of Dion, the oldest surviving pipe organ ever found. Excavations in the summer of 1992, led by Dimitrios Pandermalis, uncovered it east of the ancient city’s main road. The area had been drained after the nearby river repeatedly flooded parts of the site. Workers found small copper tubes and a larger rectangular copper plate, some pieces still stuck together by hardened soil. Once the significance of the objects was clear, the surrounding earth was removed and sent to workshops for cleaning. The cleaned pieces turned out to be a musical instrument—a hydraulis—dating to the 1st century BC.

The hydraulis is considered the earliest keyboard instrument. Its design was invented in the 3rd century BC by the engineer Ctesibius in Alexandria. The instrument stands 120 cm tall and 70 cm wide. It has two rows of pipes: 24 wide pipes (18 mm in diameter) and 16 narrow ones (about 10 mm), all decorated with silver rings. The body was adorned with silver stripes and multicolored rectangular glass ornaments. Sound was produced when a keyboard opened valves, letting air flow through the pipes. Structurally, it fits between the water organs described by Hero of Alexandria and Vitruvius.

After its invention in Alexandria, the organ reached Greece during the Hellenistic period. The Romans later spread it across their empire, where it accompanied arena competitions and was played by wealthy people at home. At the Byzantine court, the hydraulis was a prestigious object. In 757, Constantine V sent one as a gift to the Frankish king Pippin the Short, bringing it to Central Europe. There, the Catholic Church adopted it, and it eventually evolved into the church organ.

A replica was built starting in 1995 at the European Cultural Center of Delphi, with support from the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sport and help from Professor Pandermalis. The reconstruction followed ancient records and the original Dion find, and it was completed in 1999.
