Roman surveying tool for projecting right angles and straight lines.

The groma (also known as croma or gruma) was a surveying instrument used in the Roman Empire. It allowed projecting right angles and straight lines, enabling centuriation—the setting up of a rectangular grid for land division. It is the only Roman surveying tool with surviving examples.

Lore & Background

The name 'groma' came to Latin from the Greek gnoma via the Etruscan language. It is unclear which meaning of the Greek γνώμων (gnomon) was used, though in multiple sources the Greek term designates the central point of a camp or town. The groma may have originated in Mesopotamia or Greece before the 4th century BC, subsequently brought to Rome by the Etruscans and named cranema. There were apparently no improvements introduced in Roman times.

The tool utilizes a rotating horizontal cross with plumb bobs hanging from all four ends. The center of the cross represents the umbilicus soli (reference point). The cross is mounted on a vertical Jacob's staff, or ferramentum. The umbilicus is offset using a bracket pivoting on the top of the staff, enabling sighting without the staff obscuring the view and allowing placement over a sturdy object. The existence of the bracket is disputed: a 1912 reconstruction suggested it, but a 1994 analysis argued the 5-kilogram cross found in Pompeii is too heavy to be supported that way, and there is no archaeological evidence of the bracket.

Despite much surviving information, details of operation are not entirely clear. The staff was inserted into the ground a bracket length away from a marker, the bracket swung so the umbilicus soli was directly over the marker's center. The cross was turned to align with desired directions, and an assistant placed a pole as directed by the surveyor (gromaticus). Distances were measured using rods. The setup works on level ground or gentle slopes; details for steep valleys are unclear. Alignment of plumb-lines is susceptible to wind, and the far plumb-line appears optically thinner, introducing an angle error of about 1.5 promille.
